Sometimes a small, single-person company does make it work. One example: DBrush, the company that makes a small groove cleaner designed to fit easily in a pocket - in fact, it's barely larger than a quarter.
"This is our third year now. We have four colors, and we do retail three-packs now," said owner and inventor Delane Woods.
Small but very useful, the DBrush features special nylon bristles that work perfectly for cleaning sand or debris from a clubface. Woods created the DBrush based on a small nail brush she had previously invented.
Attending the PGA Show in Orlando with husband Ron, Woods has worked hard to form relationships with distributors and get her tiny but useful product out to consumers. She's increased sales over the past year despite the economy.
As her efforts pay off, she's expanding by adding a divot tool that fits a DBrush.
"Divot tools are very cool right now," Woods said. "The new divot tool is made specifically for the little DBrush. The DBrush will clip in the top so it covers the bristles. Any dirt will be clipped away, and then there is a magnetic ball marker" as well as the repair portion of the tool.
Both the DBrush and the divot tool, which will be available in the spring, can be customized with a company or event logo.
And while Woods says she's not ready to retire off her earnings - yet - her story is one of small yet positive growth in a struggling industry.
